Aconcagua Services - 2007 / 2008
CAMPS
Far from everything and near to the bare essential
Our travel agency has the advantage of owning the camps at Confluencia, Plaza de Mulas and Plaza Argentina during the climbing season. They are comfortable enough to spend a good deal of time, being fully equipped, with wide dinner tents, electrical light, tables and banks to have our meals, storage tents and bathroom tents. Here excellent workers, who prepare delicious meals and provide an excellent service, will attend you.
PUENTE DEL INCA HOSTEL
During the Inca Empire this spot was a strategic point for the crossing of the Andes mountain, over the last years it has become the point of departure for every expedition, whose aim is to reach the summit of Mt. Aconcagua. Puente del Inca Hostel was built here and it is the only lodging in this strategic zone, five kilometres from the Aconcagua park trailhead.
For the people working in Aymará Tourism, there is great feeling of satisfaction knowing that we are the ones responsible for the running of this hostel, offering the best services to mountaineers.
TRANSPORT OF LOAD BY MULES
Aymará Adventures & Expeditions owns more than 100 mules which carry people and belongings.
The difference between the mules that carry people and the mules that carry gear is that the ones for people are tamer.
These animals pasture during autumn, winter and spring, this means, from the middle of March to the middle of November. Before starting with the summer season, these animals are tested and given medicine by veterinarians. Since each of the mules has a sanitary book, they are all controlled. At the beginning of the Aconcagua season, they are transported by lorries to Puente del Inca without shoeing to avoid any injury.
During the season, they are treated with a lot of care and attention. It is important to take into account that after two trips to Plaza de Mulas and one to Plaza Argentina, the mules rest 4 or 5 days, so as to recover from this activity. It is very common to see that some mules are hurt in their chest, behind their forwards legs, because of the girth. They are immediately healed with special medicaments and they rest the time it is necessary.
The negative aspect of these animals is their untamed character. That is why we count on a great team, who have dedicated their lives to country and animals - LOS ARRIEROS. They deal with the animals in their own special way, understood and managed by their own familiar traditions.
From Puente Del Inca to the intermediate camps (3.000 m), from this camp to the Base Camps (4.000 m) and on the return to Puente del Inca, your belongings will be carried by mules. Each mule can carry up to a limit of 180 kg, but our mules only carry 60 kg to move comfortably on the mountain. Every client may transport on the mules a maximum of 30 kg on each stage of the approach.
We strongly recommend you to bring a strong duffel bag, to load your belongings on the mules, and to envelope the axes and crampons, in order to avoid hurting the animals. If you load your backpack on the mules, remember to close all the buckles, since we should not forget the wild nature of these animals.
PORTERS TO HIGH CAMPS
On the Aconcagua Mountain, a characteristic figure from the Himalayas, has become more important: the porters. Generally, they are very strong people, and most of them have reached the summit many times, and their bodies` response to altitude is notoriously faster and better than many athletes.
The porters are a necessity for some people and expeditions that need to transport a lot of equipment to the high camps.
In Aymará Adventures and Expeditions, we believe that their job, which is carrying the ordinary equipment of the expedition (tents, kitchen sets, altitude food, fuel, stoves, ropes and the garbage produced for the group), helps our participants to move in a comfortable way and with more energy to achieve their goal, which is reaching the summit. Besides, and undoubtedly this helps the local economy, since it means works for a great number of people.
A porter can carry 20 kg to the predestinated destination. If you buy two porters, you are assuring that 40 kg. will be carried to the final destination, and it does not necessary have to do with the number of people that do the work. Each client has to carry his/her personal equipment but if you want to hire a porter, please let us know.
